DRY MACULAR DEGENERATION TREATMENT

WHAT IS DRY AMD?

Dry AMD is one of the most common forms of macular degeneration, accounting for about 80-90% of cases. In dry AMD, small white or yellowish deposits, called drusen, accumulate in the macula. Drusen are created of lipids and other proteins and overtime, the proliferation and presence of drusen can lead to a gradual loss of central vision.
The presence of drusen is one of the early signs that an eye care professional looks for when diagnosing AMD. Regular eye exams, including a dilated eye examination, are important for detecting drusen and other changes in the retina associated with macular degeneration.
It’s important to note that while the presence of drusen increases the risk of developing AMD, not everyone with drusen will develop the condition. Other factors, such as genetics, overall health, and lifestyle, also play a role in the development and progression of AMD.
