How Ray-Ban Meta AI Glasses are Changing Life for Low Vision Patients

One thing I’ve learned in my years of practice is that AI technology can truly transform lives. This is very apparent in the world of low vision care, where recent advances are giving patients a newfound sense of independence and hope. As an optometrist and as someone who genuinely believes that vision is a gift worth fighting for, I want to share a remarkable story that demonstrates how Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses are helping this group of patients.

Meet Wayne: A Spark Reignited by AI Technology
Recently, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Wayne and his grandson, Josh. Wayne is living with choroideremia which gradually destroys the cells in the back of the eye. For years, Wayne’s world had been growing darker with only the faintest light perception remaining. On a good day, he could see his house lights or maybe catch a flicker from the fireplace. Reading a food label, navigating the pantry, or seeing his beloved dog became overwhelming tasks.
But this is where the story takes an inspiring turn. Wayne began using Ray-Ban Meta glasses – a wearable device powered by artificial intelligence (AI). Suddenly, his life changed in unimaginable ways.
Watch this video of a real-life demonstration with Wayne and his grandson, Josh.
What makes these glasses special? They combine a stylish wearable frame with advanced AI and a tiny camera. This technology allows users to ask their glasses what they are viewing. Here’s how Wayne described the experience:
“I’ll tell you, these glasses have given me a big spark in my life. Things were pretty gloomy for eight or ten years. And then along comes this and it’s so exciting… every day I’m finding out things I never knew before.”
He shared that he could stand in front of his fridge, pick up a jar, and ask Meta Ray-Bans, “What is this?” and it would reply, “Pickles”. This is a small thing for many, but for Wayne, it’s life-changing. Now he can pick whatever he wants from the pantry, just like everyone else. These advancements in AI technology are creating pathways for greater independence.

Independence Through Innovation
AI technology serves as a vital resource in ensuring that patients can navigate their daily lives. Wayne isn’t just identifying objects, he’s regaining independence. He can walk around his 50-acre property without getting lost, select his own lunch and finally feel confident in his appearance (matching colors, no more surprise outfits!). He’s living life on his own terms again and it’s all thanks to Ray-Ban Meta glasses describing the world to him.
His grandson, Josh, is also part of the story. Josh helps out as a “Be My Eyes” volunteer, which is another AI-powered support network that connects blind and low vision users with sighted helpers around the world. In just a few clicks, someone like Josh can help identify objects, read labels, or offer directions in real time through the very same glasses.

What Does This Mean for Other Patients?
As an optometrist, I see the Ray-Ban Meta glasses and similar AI wearables as a huge leap forward. They don’t restore lost vision, but they offer practical, real-world support for people who have felt left behind by conventional solutions. Here’s why it matters:
- Increased Independence: Simple daily activities become possible again
- Real-Time Support: No more waiting for help. Get information when you need it
- Greater Confidence: Choosing clothes, preparing meals, or just feeling included in family life
- Connection to Community: Apps like Be My Eyes foster a sense of belonging and mutual aid

Are Ray-Ban Meta AI Glasses Right for You or a Loved One?
If you or someone you know is living with low vision or blindness, AI wearables might just be the next step in your care journey. As always, I encourage patients to ask questions and explore all options. Technology isn’t a replacement for the human touch, but it can be an incredible partner in helping you live your best life.
For many patients, integrating AI technology into their lives represents a new future of possibilities. The field of optometry is evolving with AI technology, providing innovative solutions.
As optometrists, we’re committed to staying at the forefront of innovation. Everyone deserves access to the latest solutions that promote independence and dignity and if you’d like to try AI glasses, have questions about your vision, or just want to learn more, my door is always open.
Remember, vision care is about more than sight. It’s about empowerment, choice, and hope through advancements like AI technology. Sometimes, all it takes is a spark.
